Nearly twice the money for roughly twice the time on the ice, in a group running about four people per guide instead of eleven, with lunch eaten on the glacier.
The ratio is the argument. On a standard hike with eleven people, the pace is set by the slowest and the guide spends a share of the morning managing the line. At four to a guide you go further, you stop where you want, and you get into features a larger group would be walked past.
The catch is that it has almost no review history yet, and that a first-timer will get most of the experience out of the standard trip. Book this one on a second visit, or when the money genuinely is not the constraint.
The Queenstown version
This is not really a heli hike product; it is a transport product with a heli hike inside it. A scenic flight leaves Queenstown, crosses the Main Divide, lands on the coast, you do a guided walk on the glacier, and you fly back the same afternoon.
Read the price the right way and it makes sense. Doing it independently means eleven hours of driving and at least two nights in Franz Josef. This removes all of that and replaces it with one of the best scenic flights in the country, twice.
It also concentrates the weather risk into a single day, which is the honest argument against it. If you are already going to the West Coast, book the standard hike instead.

A 1:4 group ratio and roughly double the time is where the new material is. You will get into features the standard hike walks past.
Eleven hours of driving removed, two crossings of the Main Divide added, and the whole thing done between breakfast and dinner.
The twenty-minute flight at $199 lands on snow and lets you out for ten minutes. It shows you the same glacier without asking you to walk on it.
