Franz Josef sits under one of the wettest skies in New Zealand, and across a season somewhere between half and sixty per cent of scheduled trips are affected by weather. A heli hike is worse than a scenic flight, because the machine has to come back for you. That number should change how you build the trip, not whether you take it.

Why the number is so high
A valley, a range and the Tasman Sea
The rain that makes the glacier is the rain that grounds the hike.
Franz Josef village sits at the foot of a steep valley on the western side of the Southern Alps. Moist air comes in off the Tasman Sea, hits a wall of three-thousand-metre mountains and dumps its water on the western slopes. That is the reason the glacier exists at this latitude and this low an altitude, and it is also the reason the helicopters spend so much of the year on the ground.
A heli hike needs more than a flight does. A scenic flight needs one workable window: climb, circle, land, return. A hike needs the weather to hold for three hours, because at the end of it a machine has to fly back up and find you. That is why operators will sell sightseeing flights on mornings they will not put walkers on the ice.
This is also why you will see people standing in sunshine outside the base being told there is no trip. Valley-floor weather is not glacier weather. What matters is the cloud sitting on the névé, four kilometres away and thirteen hundred metres up.

None of these is a trick. They are simply what people who get onto the ice actually do.
- Stay two nights, not one
The single highest-value decision on this page. One night gives you one morning. Two nights give you two mornings and an afternoon, and the odds go from a coin toss to comfortably in your favour. Three nights and the weather stops being the story.
- Book the first departure of the day
Air over a glacier heats through the day and cloud builds against the Main Divide from late morning. First slots fly in the stillest air and get the low light in the tunnels. They also fill first.
- Book for your first morning, not your last
A cancellation on day one can be moved to day two. A cancellation on your departure morning is a refund and a five-hour drive with nothing to show for it.
- Ring on the day rather than waiting
If the morning clears unexpectedly, operators fill from the people in front of them. If your slot looks doubtful, ask to be moved earlier rather than hoping.
- Have a fallback booked, not just imagined
The quad bikes at $138 run in weather that grounds everything else, and the Lake Mapourika kayak at $74 is at its best on a still grey morning. A cancelled hike hurts less when the day already has something in it.
- Ask what happens to a shortened trip

What happens, and what to do next
The decision is usually made within a couple of hours of your slot, and it is made by the pilot and the guides rather than by the desk. You get a phone call or a message, and you are refunded in full — through the listings on this site that refund is automatic rather than something you chase.
Then ask three questions, in this order. Is there a later slot today? Weather here moves fast and a nine o’clock cancellation frequently becomes a one o’clock departure.
